Game time!

I’m sat in my hotel room in Hillerod, Denmark as I write this. The rest of the squad and I flew into Copenhagen last night in preparation for the European Championships later this week. This is the boring part before the Tournament begins. Our days are taken up with team meetings, classification, a small amount of training and a lot of waiting around!
Last week’s training was relatively light with the emphasis on quality to ensure that we all arrived in Denmark fresh and ready to put our “A-Game” on the court. My week consisted of two situation-based training sessions involving lots of game-play, two power-based weight sessions, two conditioning sessions (one harder push and one sprint session) and a massage to iron out all the last-minute niggles!
This morning we had meetings with the coach to discuss our individual aims and objectives as well as the goals of the team as a whole. The squad we have here in Denmark reflects where we are at in our build up to 2012 so there is a wide range in the abilities’ of the players present. Part of my job as Captain is to help the players here put in their best performances so the coach can see what they have to offer. After lunch we ran our “chair check” which is basically where we make sure all our equipment is running correctly and that we’re ready to take the court. Then it was time for one of two light training sessions we’ll have before games start on Wednesday. These are really just run-throughs; the real work has been done throughout the year.
Tomorrow we have our last training session in the morning before the Opening Ceremony at four. After that it’s Game time! I’ll try to check back in with you later in the week to keep you posted on how we’re doing but in the meantime there are a couple of places you can go to find out more…
www.ecwheelchairrugby2009.dk is the official Tournament website and should keep you up to date with all the news and results from the Championships.
www.gbwr.org.uk is GB’s official website and should feature news and reports on our day-to-day progress in the competition.
Please take a look and support us in our attempt to win the European Title for an unprecedented fourth time in a row!
